  1. What is your definition of successful?Accomplishing the goals you set for yourself and being happy with your life at the end of it.
  2. What have you given up to become successful? So far, I've given up free time to hang out with friends and relax.
  3. What did Parks give up to become successful? A life at home and a better relationship with his family.
  4. Who was Genevieve Young's father? A rich business man Ambassador William ( Married Sally Alves divorced her, married Elizabeth Campbell divorced her and married Genevieve Young)
  5. How much was Parks advanced to write his first book (and eventual best-selling autobiography)?  He offered him $10,000 in advance based on the 7 pages he had written
  6. How much money did Elijah Muhammad offer Parks to do a story on The Nation of Islam? Half of a Million dollars.
  7. Why did Parks refuse the money? Because he was afraid that if he took the money Muhammad would influence his take on the story.
  8. What was significant about the movie The Learning Tree? It made Parks the first black director in Hollywood 
  9. What was significant about the character Shaft? He was the first black superhero children and others had to look up to. 
  10. What was Gordon Parks' choice of weapons? A 35 mm camera
  11. What reason did Genevieve Young give for the divorce? The turmoil Parks was going through at the time and the strain it put on her to try to be supportive.

  15. What will you remember about Gordon Parks in ten years? How much he had to struggle through as a black photographer and director and how much racism he must have endured just to get his work done.
